Neurodevelopmental Unit (NDU) Community-Based Acute Treatment (CBAT)

The Neurodevelopmental Unit (NDU) at Italian Home for Children is a short-term residential stay for youth ages 4 to 13 who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Intellectual Disability (ID) and are also experiencing a mental health crisis. At our community-based campus in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston, NDU participants will engage in therapeutic treatment while also receiving specialized support in activities of daily living. The goal is for youth to return to baseline functioning, so they can return home and back to the routine with skills to help them maintain baseline.

The NDU at Italian Home is the first CBAT in Massachusetts specifically designed to meet the needs of youth with ASD/IDD. Intensive therapeutic services are delivered by a multidisciplinary team including BCBAs, clinicians, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, nursing, and psychiatry. In this state of the art residential environment, youth are supported in a ratio of 1:2 direct care behavior technicians, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
